To prove this offense, the State must establish each of the following elements: Front and rear plates required; Motorcycles and trailers: rear only; Class C misdemeanor.

Worked example 1

Texas requires a vehicle to display:

  1. Only a rear plate
  2. Two license plates — one in the front and one in the rear of the vehicle (with limited exceptions for some motorcycles, trailers, and certain vehicles) Correct
  3. Three plates
  4. No plates if registration is current
Why: Texas-registered vehicles must display front and rear plates. Motorcycles and certain vehicles are exempt from the front-plate requirement.
